[Please note that we have recently (November 2015) decided to reboot and rewrite a great deal of our canon, which had become outdated and convoluted over the years, the better to not confuse and isolate newcomers who would have to learn so much of our old backstory. You may spot references to this old canon in various topics across this board from prior to November 2015. When in doubt, the information in this thread takes precedence and is considered to be the current canon.]

In general, IGNOLand is a very open site, and we prefer to let our roleplaying build the canon for us, rather than force it to adhere to a pre-existing storyline. Furthermore, we have no ongoing "plot", or particular goal to work towards. You are free to jump right in, create a character, and begin playing without having to read this topic, but it is recommended to do so as it will provide more insight into the setting and its history.

Geography

[Note: map revision currently in the works.]

"IGNOLand" is the largest landmass on the planet Earth, considered to be a supercontinent. It is composed of several different provinces - an umbrella term used to describe the regions united by a shared government, culture, or theme. These provinces are:
  • The Empire - a largely urban region in central IGNOLand, ruled by the charismatic Konnungur Bones. Notable for IGNO City, the largest metropolis in IGNOLand, and Knochenstadt, the political heart from which Bones rules. Its theme is 'urban'.
  • Blood Country - a perpetually-overcast wasteland where 'spooky' supernatural-themed creatures make their home. It is ruled by Blood Kaiser Karma. Its theme is 'supernatural', and has a strong connection to the Shadow element.
  • The Wayward Woods - a dense, heavily-forested province with strong magical properties, this place is home to many 'token fantasy races' like elves, faeries and centaurs. Its themes are 'high fantasy'and 'magic' and it is most closely associated with the Earth element.
  • Mertopia - an aquatic province in the seas beneath IGNOLand, its primary kingdom is ruled by Prince Lemmy. The theme is 'undersea', and is associated with the Water element.
  • The Outback - The only province of IGNOLand whose land is not physically attached, The Outback is part-urban center, part-untamed wilderness. Let's not beat around the bush, you know what this place is like. Its theme is 'Australia' and it is associated with the Lightning element.
  • Bradios Banks - a mechanized floating continent above The Empire, it is overseen by His Neutralness Bradios as a safe haven for those who seek political refuge from both The Empire and The Outback. Its theme is 'urban' and it is associated with the Metal element.
  • The Ragged Wastes - colloquial term for the dry and arid regions of southwestern IGNOLand, it is primarily comprised of vast canyons and deserts. The Peeninsula is technically part of this province, albeit on the more fertile coastline. Its theme is 'hot' and it is associated with both the Fire and Light elements.
  • The Overgrown Coastline - colloquial term for the tropical regions of southern IGNOLand, this popular tourist destination contains sandy beaches and treacherous jungles. Its theme is 'tropical' and it is connected to the Wind element.
  • The Ice Plains - the frigid regions of northern IGNOLand, containing vast stretches of ice and snow and surrounded by tall mountain ranges. Its theme is 'cold' and you know damn well which element it's associated with.
  • The Underground - the enormous system of caverns and tunnels that stretches across all of IGNOLand, it is a dangerous region primarily inhabited by the hostile Gnomes. While technically classified as 'a province', it's truly its own underground world and is far too vast and dangerous to be completely documented.
It's important to take the scale of IGNOLand into mind when understanding that many of these provinces can be considered 'continents' in their own right, and are in fact much larger than they appear on a map. A single province can be home to several of its own subregions which may vary in size from large cities to small countries in their own right. Always bear in mind that our world is shaped by our users - do not be limited by what you see on the map, or in the World Atlas. When you choose a province, you are often choosing a bare-bones tract of land with little established about it beyond its 'theme', general climate, political affiliations, and the sorts of races and cultures that may inhabit it. Create your own villages and cities!! Populate that province with your own ideas!! We rely on the creative minds of our members to give life to the world around us.

Worth noting that, while IGNOLand's enormous size and cultural variety causes it to be considered 'the center of the world', there are of course other continents out there. Being that this site is called 'IGNOLand', that is the landmass our canon and roleplays are expected to focus on, and any outer continents will be largely unestablished and mentioned infrequently.

You are allowed to create a 'foreign' character who hails from one of these outer lands and is coming to IGNOLand for the first time, but you must run your ideas by me first!! For one thing, IGNOLand already has plenty of provinces to choose from, and it's preferable that you set your character up in one of them. For another, things could wind up becoming messy if we have too many extra continents floating around on a finite planet where IGNOLand is meant to be the 'heart' of our world. While I certainly welcome any ideas that may provide some additional color to our universe, I just don't want to have 10 different members freely creating 10 different, new landmasses that ultimately serve little purpose beyond being their character's homeland. Not to mention, for every new land developed, I have another location to include on the map. TL;DR I'm happy to consider your ideas in the spirit of worldbuilding and creative freedom, so long as these places are *worth* establishing.

Please browse the topics in the World Atlas for information about the various provinces in our land.

Politics and Strife

There are three primary political factions to be aware of in IGNOLand:
  • Supporters of The Empire (Imperials)
  • Supporters of The Outback (Outbackians)
  • Neutral Nation (Neutrals)
The technical fourth faction - 'unaffiliated' - is not acknowledged by the Empire's leader, Konungur Bones, and any who express dissent with his rulership are immediately branded Neutrals and hunted down for capture. As such, it is advised to keep one's political affiliations on the down-low when paying a visit to IGNO City - for Bones has eyes and ears everywhere.

Still, what does it actually mean to belong to one of these factions in IGNOLand? It all goes back to the Empire-Outbackian War, 40 years ago. Spoiled for length.

The War (Show/Hide)

As with its geographical makeup, the political and cultural situations of the various provinces and regions are largely to be decided through your own roleplaying and worldbuilding. Did the Northern and Southern Zedkiel races have a falling out in the distant past? How do the Beast Shifters and Half-Beast races get along? Did Blood Country ever go to war with other provinces? Ultimately these sorts of ideas are for our members to determine, and build upon our ever-expanding world of IGNOLand.

Racism and Discrimination

The uncomfortable word no one likes to use, but nonetheless is a regular part of our everyday lives - and for some, more regular than others.

Generally speaking, racism is a cultural issue. What races are disrespected in some provinces and communities may be perfectly accepted in others. Again, this is one of those issues that's ultimately up to our players to decide when developing the races and cultures of IGNOLand. There are, however, some races and factions that ought to be particularly aware of the potential discrimination that they may be faced with.
  • As a general rule, zombies and the undead aren't very well accepted outside the Blood Country. People will try to keep their distance, avoid eye contact, switch to the opposite sidewalk when walking down the street, pick a different lane in the grocery store checkout, etc. Generally it's more of a passive sort of avoidance, out of fear that all undead citizens are evil and interested in eating your flesh (who says they're interested in your flesh anyways? Conceited much?). Of course, there are also more vocal and aggressive types who might actively harass the undead, throwing out slurs like 'blood-sucker' or 'corpse breath'.
  • Some of the more outlandish-looking demons may be treated this way, typically lumped in with the undead example above. If you are instantly recognizable as a demon, the same stereotypes - 'they want to eat me', 'they're up to no good', 'obviously evil', etc - might be thrown on you. However, while people typically try to avoid eye contact with the undead, demons are more likely to be met with long, uncomfortable stares on the bus or train, or hear children quickly silenced by their parents for asking questions like 'mommy, why does he have so many arms?'.
  • The more feral-looking Beast races will often be treated as though they are less capable than their more humanoid counterparts. People may make comments like 'oh, is this elevator really quadruped-accessible?', or whisper 'do they even HAVE doors where they come from?' behind their backs, as though they simply do not have the capacity to participate in what are recognized as 'human' activities. Similarly, if a Beast is seen struggling performing such actions and asks if someone could lend them a hand, don't be surprised to find people averting their gaze and pretending to be too busy with something else to assist them. Half-Beasts, such as Centaurs and Nagas, may be denied entry to restaurants and other establishments with explanations like 'lack of proper seating'. Beast-Shifters, even those who prefer their more feral forms, are generally advised to take a more humanoid shape when visiting particularly urban areas designed with humans in mind, but this unfortunately will not help their non-shifting cousins.
  • As mentioned, Neutrals are heavily-discriminated against and even persecuted in Empire territory, such as IGNO City. Anyone who expresses dissatisfaction with its ruler, Konungur Bones, may find themselves ostracized by their peers - whether out of a genuine disagreement with their political beliefs, or out of fear that associating with a Neutral may lead to them receiving punishment as well.
  • While not all of those born with - or having chosen - the Shadow element belong to the sorts of races associated with Blood Country, you may not know it by the way they're treated. Despite the other 8 elements typically regarded as equal, Shadowcasters are routinely looked down upon as 'evil' or 'unnatural', and judged to universally be liars, thieves, or other unsavory criminal types. Parents may even abandon or disown a child of the Shadow element as a result of these age-old superstitions. Sadly, this is a stereotype that extends almost worldwide, and most provinces will have varying degrees of Shadow discrimination ranging from dirty looks to outright corporal punishment. Fortunately, Blood Country is a safe haven for Shadowcasters of all kinds - even the very races that are known for discriminating against Blood Country nationals.
This list will be added to as prominent examples arise.

As for playing a 'racist' character: TREAD. CAREFULLY. This is a fictional community, and should be treated as such - any discrimination shown towards other characters must be cut-and-dry Fantastic Racism. Let's face it, discrimination is a real thing, and its presence gives realism and life to a fictional world because a perfect utopia would get pretty boring after a while. But any racism and discrimination in IGNOLand needs to revolve around the things that make our world fictional - humans vs. beasts, pixies vs. piskis, Imperials vs. Neutrals, all that good 'fantasy' stuff. There's a difference between having your heroic paladin show disdain for undead characters, and attempting to excuse discrimination towards characters with different skintones, sexualities, gender identities and whathaveyou under the guise of 'b-but I'm totally in character so it's okay, it's not like I'M the one discriminating!!' The world of IGNOLand accepts people of all complexions, sexualities, gender identities, and anything else that receives discrimination in the real-world because one of the best things about fantasy is being able to escape from the things that suck about real life. We want this community to be a safe and accepting space for writers of all kinds, and will absolutely NOT tolerate our world and characters being used as a stand-in to let you cause harm to others.
